John Huston is a trial lawyer with 42 years of experience representing public and private entities and individuals in court in all areas of tort litigation, including wrongful death, complex products liability, architects and engineers professional liability law suits, and premises liability and motor vehicle accident cases that result in substantial personal injury and/or property damage. He also represents clients in commercial litigation that involves complex technical issues.

Having a B.E. in Engineering from Yale University, John is exceptionally adept at cross-examining technical experts, which he has done in more than 100 instances in a wide variety of products liability and professional liability cases.

Also, as the former General Counsel for Professional Service Industries, Inc., (PSI), the nation’s largest independent engineering testing company, John possesses an insider’s perspective that clients appreciate and respect. As General Counsel, he managed a substantial number of professional liability cases, most of which involved construction practices and construction materials, including asbestos and other environmental testing. He also served as counsel to senior management on a broad range of legal subjects, including employment issues, contracts and liability reduction.

Professional Background

John joined Tressler in 1994. Before that and his position as the General Counsel of PSI, he was a trial attorney with the McKenna Storer firm in Chicago.
A veteran, John served as a lieutenant in the United States Naval Reserves, where he was the Electrical Officer on the flagships of the NATO (2nd) and Mediterranean (6th) Fleets, and an engineering instructor at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center as part of the Navy’s Nuclear Power Program.

He has achieved an AV® Preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell, which is a testament to the fact that a lawyer’s peers rank him at the highest level of professional excellence. He has also been selected by Leading Lawyers® Network as a “Leading Lawyer" in Products Liability Defense Law, and Professional Malpractice Defense: Including Legal/Technical/Financial. From 2005 to 2007, John was named to Illinois Super Lawyers in the areas of Civil Litigation Defense, Professional Liability: Defense, and Personal Injury Defense: Products.

Representative Experience

  • John has successfully defended the designers and manufacturers of a wide variety of industrial and consumer products from large electrical switchboards that explode and cause death to small plastic components that leak and cause massive property damage. He has also defended many medical malpractice cases involving complex surgeries, cancer diagnoses, and even veterinary malpractice (his favorite).
