What is SOPPA?
The Illinois Legislature passed amendments to the Student Online Personal Protection Act (“SOPPA”) that will take effect on July 1, 2021. This new law is mandatory for any “school” that serves students from K through 12th grade, and it will directly impact the collection and storage of student information.
SOPPA Compliance
The significant burden imposed by SOPPA will surprise many Illinois public and private schools. Tressler’s SOPPA Compliance team highly recommends that schools work toward compliance as soon as possible.
Without taking the steps necessary to fully comply with SOPPA, Illinois public schools may be subject to liability not only for their own acts or omissions, but the missteps of the vendors they entrusted with student information. It is never too early to begin taking steps toward SOPPA compliance, and we look forward to partnering with you to achieve these important goals.
