Kathleen Hart Spotlight

Kathleen Hart is an associate in the Insurance Practice Group. She focuses her practice in the areas of insurance coverage analysis and litigation. Kathleen has experience drafting coverage opinions and also has participated in all phases of pre-trial litigation, including pleadings, discovery, depositions, witness preparation and oral arguments.

Kathleen received her J.D. from The John Marshall Law School (Chicago) and currently works out of Tressler's Chicago office.

Where are you from?

I grew up in San Diego.

 What was your first job?

My first job was at Hometown Buffet as a cashier and occasionally their mascot, a bumblebee.

Do you have any hidden talents and/or unique hobbies?

Not that I am aware of.

What is on your bucket list?

I would like to eat puffer fish (“fugu”) in Thailand.

I would like to go snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.

Why did you decide to become an attorney?

I decided to become an attorney because during my senior year of high school, we were given the assignment of preparing for a mock trial. I really enjoyed developing arguments, and arguing my case before my peers. Thereafter, upon attending college, I enrolled in legal courses and enjoyed those as well.

What does a typical workday look like for you?

I do not necessarily have a “typical” day. A work day for me will generally consist of at least one of the following: (1) reviewing claims or underlying lawsuits and comparing those allegations to the language contained in any relevant insurance policies to determine whether those policies afford coverage; (2) conducting research on various coverage issues; (3) engaging in telephone conferences or drafting coverage opinions to advise the insurer of our recommendations; and (4) drafting various coverage correspondences to insureds on behalf of insurers. To the extent I have any pending declaratory judgment actions, my day may also consist of various litigation-related tasks.

Why did you choose your areas of practice?

Tressler chose me! I continue to choose my areas of practice because of the thought provoking coverage issues involved.

What do you like most about Tressler?

What I like most about Tressler is that as an associate you are encouraged to engage in business development and to attend various networking opportunities that encourage professional growth.

What are you most proud of, professionally and/or personally?

I am most proud of being a first-generation college graduate.

Please choose one topic to write about.

Prior to signing up for my first and only marathon, I had never ran a 5k. For some crazy reason, I just woke up one day and decided that I was going to sign up for a marathon. Despite the temptation to stop at several fast food restaurants along the way, I completed the marathon, and hopefully, I will never have the desire to do that again!

Any favorite line from a movie?

“I want the truth.”

“You can’t handle the truth.”

People would be surprised if they knew:

I went skydiving for my 18th birthday.
